CHUTZPAH or CHUTZPA or, less commonly, HUTZPAH or HUTZPA


CHUTZPAH or CHUTZPA or, less commonly, HUTZPAH or HUTZPA [ˈxʊtspə,ˈhʊtspə,ˈkhʊtspə] means fearlessness; extreme effrontery; shameless audacity for good or for bad.

"It's a sign of not just confidence, but chutzpah."

Bravery that borders on rudeness is chutzpah. If you have chutzpah, you say what you think without worrying about hurting someone's feelings, looking silly, or getting in trouble.

"They were fueled by chutzpah and hungry for approval."

If you say that someone has chutzpah, you mean that you admire the fact that they are not afraid or embarrassed to do or say things that shock, surprise, or annoy other people.

"I have to tell you, I admire your chutzpah."

Utter nerve, unusual and shocking behavior, involving taking risks but not feeling guilty is chutzpah. Chutzpah can be destructive and ugly or vital and fantastic, but never in-between.

The original Yiddish word, meaning "impudence or gall", has a strong negative connotation. However, the form which entered English has taken on a broader meaning, having been popularized through vernacular use in literature and various media.
